Standard Operating Procedure for Maintenance of Certification of ICLAM Diplomates
1.1. Purpose and scope
INDIAN COLLEGE OF LABORATORY ANIMAL MEDICINE (ICLAM)
Indian College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ICLAM) https://www.iclam.in/index.php was established in 2020 as an independent certification organization for personal accreditation in India. It is a member of International Association of Colleges of Laboratory Animal Medicine (IACLAM) https://iaclam.org/index.php. It aims for the advancement of Laboratory Animal Medicine by establishing standards of training and experience. Aim of the ICLAM is harmonization of professional and ethical standards in Laboratory Animal Medicine practice on an international platform for the benefit of the society in general. It also aims for harmonization of training as per the member colleges of the IACLAM.
The purpose of this SOP is to outline the procedures for maintenance of certification by the ICLAM Diplomates who have passed the examinations.
1.2. Responsibility
It is responsibility of the Registrar to see that the regular Diplomates are encouraged to meet the criteria for maintenance of ICLAM Diplomate certification as per this SOP. The Diplomates are also responsible for earning enough credit points so that they can maintain their certification after every ten years from four of the modules mentioned below.
1.3 Procedure
1.3.1. Maintenance requirements
The ICLAM shall continue putting the date of renewal of maintenance on the certificates of the first batch coming out of the examination. The maintenance will be done every five years from obtaining the certification.
In case of the old Diplomates, the Secretary, ICLAM shall count the no. of years from obtaining the first certificate and shall prepare a list of Diplomates who need to apply for maintenance of their certificates in a year wise tabulated form.
1.3.2. Criteria for maintenance of DICLAM certificates
(All Diplomates has to earn minimum 50 credit points over a period of 05 years in order to renew their ICLAM certificates)
1.3.2.1. Continuing Education Program
A. Obtaining Fellow/ Diplomate of other Societies- 2 points. (Maximum of 4 points to be considered for 05 years)
B. Participation/ attending laboratory animal science related conference of any associations (online or offline) of at least one day duration (2 point each event/ conference and maximum of 6 points to be considered for 05 years).
C. Participation/ attending laboratory animal science related workshops/ seminar/ symposium (online or offline)/ short course or certification/ webinar etc. of at least half-day duration (1 point each event/ workshops/ seminar/ symposium and maximum of 3 points to be considered for 05 years). [Note: Three (3) 1:00 to 1:30 hrs of CLAMEP training of ICLAM would be considered equivalent to half-day for this purpose.
D. PG Diploma courses on animal welfare/ ethics etc. (1 point each course and maximum 2 points per 5 years)
E. Completing FELASA course (2 points)
1.3.2.2. Scholarly Activity in Biomedical Field
A. First author of a paper involving laboratory animal science aspects in a peer reviewed/ PubMed indexed journal (4 points per article - Maximum 8 points to be considered per year).

1.3.2.3. Engagement in Professional Activities
A. Teaching- Candidates engaged in full time (more than 50% time) laboratory animal science related teaching, research, demonstration, laboratory animal science practice including laboratory work (2 points per year).
B. Demonstrations- Candidates engaged in less than 50% time in laboratory animal science related teaching, research, demonstration, laboratory animal science practice including laboratory work (1 point per year).
C. Registering students for ICLAM- Candidates who register students for ICLAM training under them will receive 2 point per student per year. In case the student cannot pass the examination in first attempt, the candidate (Supervisor) shall get 1 credit point per year. However, no further point will be granter after two years even if the student cannot pass the examination.
D. Delivering expert talk for ICLAM Trainees on laboratory animal science subject as per the RDD- Candidates who engage a talk of approx. 1 hour duration, shall receive 2 points. Maximum 6 points can be earned in each year. Delivering a talk must be documented in the form of email copy of the Secretary and must be submitted timely to the Registrar, ICLAM for record of the ICLAM.
E. Submitting model questions for ICLAM training- Members who submit 10 objective type questions with clear answer shall receive 1 point. Maximum 3 points can be earned every year.
F. Submission of monthly reports of the ICLAM Trainees by Major Supervisor- Major as well as Minor Supervisors shall receive 2 points for every 11 reports a year.
G. Review of articles in indexed/ non-indexed journals- Members who review articles in non-indexed journals shall receive 1 point each review. Members who review articles in indexed journals shall receive 2 point each review Maximum 4 points can be earned in five years.
1.3.2.4. Professional Organizational Activities
A. Oral/ poster/ case presentations of laboratory animal science related work in LASA/ ICLAM conferences (2 points each maximum of 4 points to be considered per year).
B. Oral/ poster/ case presentations (online/ offline mode) of laboratory animal science related work in biomedical science meetings other than LASA/ ICLAM (1 point each and maximum of 4 points to be considered per year).
C. Organizing/ hosting LASA/ ICLAM conferences as Organizing Secretary (4 points per event per 05 years). Team member in Organizing Committee including Chairman (2 points per event per 05 years).
D. Conducting laboratory animal science and related workshops/ online workshops of at least one-day duration (3 points maximum of 6 points to be considered per 5 years)
E. Keynote address in laboratory animal science related conferences (4 point each maximum of 8 points to be considered per 5 years).
F. Continuing education resource person for hands-on training and teaching at laboratory animal science and related physical/ online workshop/ seminar/ symposium for more than three hour (1 point for 1 to 2 hours of training- maximum of 4 points to be considered per 5 years).
G. ICLAM Committee Member/ Examination Committee Member (2 points for each committee- maximum of 4 points to be considered per 5 years).
H. Editor of NAAS rated or peer reviewed journal (4 points for each journal editorial- maximum of 8 points to be considered per 5 years).
I. Associate Editor of NAAS rated or peer reviewed journal (2 points for each journal editorial- maximum of 4 points to be considered per 5 years).
J. Editorial Board Member of NAAS rated or peer reviewed journal (1 points for each journal editorial- maximum of 2 points to be considered per 5 years).
The Diplomates must accumulate at least 50 credit points (sr. no 1.3.2.1. to 1.3.2.4) as part of continuing education/ scholarly activity/ professional organizational activities etc. over a period of five years prior to maintenance of their certificates. The Diplomates will be required to produce documents in support of their claim for the credit points while applying for maintenance of their certificates.
In case of publications, only published articles would be considered as publications. Accepted/ submitted manuscripts will not be considered as publications. In support of publications, the candidate has to mention the PMID/ website address of the manuscript published/ soft copy of the published paper/ acceptance letter of the Editor.
1.4. Maintenance procedure of the certificates
The Maintenance Committee shall invite the application in June- July every year for maintenance of DICLAM certificate from all eligible candidates in a prescribed format giving clear-cut deadline to receive the applications. The committee shall scrutinize all applications received after the deadline. A tabulated excel sheet will be made by the Chairman of the Committee and circulated to all members of the Committee. After consensus, list of members who qualify for the renewal of their DICLAM certificates as per this SOP, will be forwarded by the Chairman of Renewal Committee to the President/ Secretary, ICLAM by Sept.- Oct. The Secretary in consultation with the President and Registrar shall finalize the list and certify the maintenance of certificates and communicate to the respective candidates about the results. The duly endorsed certificates shall be handed over to the candidates in an annual conference of LASA/ ICLAM every year.
